Our History

Fells Carpets was founded in 1915 by Mr Percy Fell, who manufactured Tab rugs in Bradley Street Castleford. Castleford was a typical mining town where every household featured a rug in front of a coal fire.

Fells Carpets History Painting

As business progressed larger premises were purchased in 1954 in Sykes street Castleford by a young Mr Roger Fell who had the foresight to see what was to be the early beginning of Wall to Wall carpet. Firstly there was machine made standard sizes woven carpet squares and rugs shortly to be followed by a wider width carpet in rolls thereby introducing Wall to Wall carpet.

Whilst things were moving fast in the woven carpet manufacturing a new method of manufacturing was also taking place in producing Wall to Wall carpets referred to as tufting. This system produced product quicker and less expensive thereby opening a massive market. Mr Roger Fell saw this as an opportunity for distribution and became a member of the W.F.D.A (Wholesale Floorcovering Distributors Association) assuring quality, service and satisfaction from a reputable company.

Business continued to progress and larger premises were purchased in 1964 in the nearby town of Pontefract. With the instruction of new manufacturing techniques the company continued to grow and  more space was required. This made way to a new purpose built warehouse in 1988. Shortly after this Tim Fell took over the running of the business from his father up until the recent purchase made by MCD group, which sees Fells Carpets now trade from their new, state of the art premises in Gildersome, Leeds.
